Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

Wetbags can be used in a variety of ways. Most people use them to store dirty dipies, however they are also handy for wet bathing suits or other soiled/wet clothing items. You can also use them to store your cloth wipes as well as for mama cloth. Planet Wise makes awesome wetbags! Some of the key features include:

  • Anti-microbial
  • Reusable to avoid using plastic bags, helping to protect our planet
  • Made in the USA
  • Made with high quality designer fabrics with coordinating waterproof inner material and locking zipper.
  • Each bag is innovatively sewn with hidden seams and sealed for no wicking or leaking.
  • Resists most stains odors – keeping smells in.

Planet Wise wetbags come in 3 sizes and tons of awesome colors/prints:

  • The small measures 8″ x 10″ and holds 1 -2 cloth diapers
  • The medium measures 13″ x 16″  and holds 8-9 cloth diapers
  • The large measures 18″ x 21″  and holds 16-17 cloth diapers

My good friend Michelle recently started using a Planet Wise wetbag and shared her thoughts on it with us:

“Last month I bought some new mama cloth to try out. I went the Imse Vimse Menstrual Pads with Wings which I ended up LOVING! When I placed the order at Mom’s Milk Boutique I wasn’t sure about the fact that they are white, but just like cloth diapers I can sun them and ta-da… no stains! My friend Sarah at Breastfeed.Babywear.ClothDiaper.Naturally figured I would need a wetbag to go along with them so she asked if I wanted to try out a small Planet Wise wetbag. Yes, please! was my reply. This month was the perfect time for me to try it out since I had so many errands to run. With the amount of time I would be away from home I wasn’t sure if I would be able to stick to my mama cloth all week. However the Planet Wise wetbag definitely made it doable.

I could stick a couple of clean pads in the wetbag, then put that into my purse and head right out the door. Wherever I was, I didn’t worry about others knowing what I had in my wetbag. I could slip to the bathroom with everything I needed in the bag (a clean pad and somewhere to put the other one). Even my kids didn’t ask me what it was. It went with me everywhere, the park, other people’s houses…all over the place! It was really nice that the smell stayed entirely contained in the wetbag and nothing leaked in my purse. When my cycle was over I washed the wetbag right along with my mama cloth.  Once everything was dry, I put all the pads right back into the wetbag. Now my clean pads have a place to stay…until next month!”

So happy to hear how well it worked out for Michelle! Congrats on the eco-friendly choice you made to switch to mama cloth and thanks a bunch for the feedback! Planet Wise wetbags truly are a great choice for all your wetbag needs! 🙂

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Michelle’s Family

Friday, December 7th, 2012

I am very excited to introduce you to Michelle and her family! Michelle is actually a good friend of mine….one who I deeply admire as a mother. She is super gentle with her children and approaches challenges with humor and grace. Read on to learn more about her awesome family!

Who are the members of your family?

There’s me (Michelle), my husband James, who always seems to have his nose in a book. Our daughter Libby (7), who doesn’t hear you until you sing to her, our son Justus (4) who is normally walking around with some Lego contraption he built and our second son Gideon (2) who eats hummus by the spoonful (scratch that) handful.

How did you meet your significant other?

We met in high school. We went to rival high schools but we were both part of a group that would do activities with each other. He actually dated my best friend before I started dating him and she kind of set us up.

What is your favorite Mom’s Milk Boutique Product?

Right now I’m trying to build up my mama cloth stash so my favorite product is the Imse Vimse Menstrual Pads with Wings, I already have one set and I’m looking to buy more.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why?

ERGO babycarrier is by far my favorite! I have four carriers: a sling, a wrap, and 2 Ergos (performance and original) I keep an Ergo in the car and one in the house. I love my other carriers for different stages but the Ergo I love that I can use it for just about any stage my babies are at. I still use it for my 2 ½ year old and have used it for other children while watching them; it’s how I know to calm a fussy child (besides nursing them).

What is the best and worst parenting advice you have ever been given?

Best advice was from my mom: you can never spoil a baby, pick them up as often as either you or baby needs to.

Worst advice was from a friend: your milk doesn’t come in for about a week so you should pick a formula before baby is born to feed them. I knew better than this because, although I was still pregnant with my first, I had already attended a La Leche League meeting or two and read the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.

What’s your number one secret for stretching a dollar?

Meal planning has to be the biggest stretch of the dollar. If I go to the store without a plan for the week I end up spending a week’s worth of grocery budget but only have a couple meals and have to go back to the store for other things. If I plan it all out before I go to the store I have a full week’s worth of meals spending the same amount of money.

There's Giddy....enjoying some hummus!

Share one special family tradition you have:

My favorite Christmas tradition is, when we set up our Christmas tree we always play the Chipmunk Christmas CD’s. Since I was a kid I can remember doing this. My mom had them on record when we were kids but as soon as I found them on CD I bought one for each of my sisters and they both still carry on this tradition.

Thanks Michelle for sharing your family with us! And even though I know your family pretty well already, I learned a few new things about you! 🙂

Would you like to have your family featured in a Friday Family Spotlight AND win a FREE $10 gift certificate to Mom’s Milk Boutique for your participation? If so email with the subject line “Friday Family Spotlight Inquiry” and share something interesting about your family in your email message.

Cloth Swim Diapers

8 month old Iz in a Imse Vimse Reusable Swim Diapers

With Spring Break on the horizon, your family might be getting ready to take a vacation to a warm destination where you’ll be spending lots of time pool or ocean side? Or perhaps you take baby swimming on a regular basis at the local recreation center for open swim or to participate in a baby swim class? Or you might be among the lucky few who live near an ocean and visit the beach frequently? Whatever the case maybe, if you are taking your baby swimming, you might consider using a cloth swim diaper.

Cloth swim diapers carry all the same ecological and economical benefits that regular cloth diapers do! Here, let’s actually do the math:

Name brand disposable swim diapers run about .90cents a piece. A brand new Imse Vimse Reusable Swim Diaper in a size large will cost you about $16 and on average will fit baby from 6months old to 15 months old. But remember that cloth diapers can be used with multiple kids. The Imse Vimse pictured here on 8 month old Iz, was actually used by his two older brothers when they were babies. So imagine how many uses this bathing suit has gotten, keeping in mind that we live in a hot, dry climate and have access to a pool and hot tub on a daily basis.  Let’s just pretend we’ve used it 100 times, even though the actual number of uses is probably higher. If we had been using disposable swim diapers we would have spent about $90, so using a cloth swim diaper saved us around $74 (not to mention that is 100 less diapers in the landfill). However it’s likely that the savings are even higher simply due to the convenience of always having a swim diaper available. You know how it is when you have to run to the store for something, you are likely to pick up other random stuff even if there is only one item such as ‘swim diapers’ on your list. Or you stop at a higher-priced convenient store on the way to the beach to pick up swim diapers and pay twice the amount you would at a big box store. The convenience of always having a swim diaper available is definitely an added bonus in my mind. Additionally because I have boys, the cloth swim diaper also functioned as a bathing suit so I never needed to purchase a separate bathing suit.

Bummis Swimmi Swim Diaper

Now you might be wondering if a cloth swim diaper is effective in holding in messes in the water. In my five years experience we have had no issues with blowouts in the pool…thank goodness! The design of cloth swim diapers is not to absorb, but to contain. Therefore you want to be sure to have a snug, but comfortable fit. In addition to the Imse Vimse Reusable Swim Diaper  I have a Bummis Swimmi Swim Diapers. One thing I like about the design of the Bummis Swimmi Swim Diaper is the velcro closure because it allows a custom fit. I also like the interior mesh fabric as it seems very effective in containing messes. The other question you might have is in regards to how well the fabric holds up with the repeated chlorine exposure. And my answer would be it does surprisingly well! As previously mentioned we’ve used the same swim diaper with multiple children over multiple years with no issues of the fabric wearing out prematurely.

Both the Bummis Swimmi Swim Diaper and the Imse Vimse Reusable Swim Diaper are great swim diaper options…and I almost forgot to mention that they both come in super-duper adorable prints including gender-specific and gender-neutral options. 🙂

Do you use a cloth swim diaper with your baby? Any extra thoughts to share? Would love to hear from you!

Sunday Funday Giveaway: Imse Vimse Flushable Liners

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Do you love cloth diapering, but are not crazy about dealing with the “messy” diapers? If so, you could try using Imse Vimse Flushable Liners. They are a great accessory to use in conjunction with your cloth diapers. They make washing cloth diapers a breeze by omitting the need to dunk or spray poopy diapers. These liners are made of an all natural, unbleached paper product that is completely biodegradable. You simply place the liner on the cloth diaper so it touches baby’s skin. The liner will allow urine through but will prevent solids from getting onto the diaper. The liner, along with the mess, is flushed away! Using flushable liners is often a nice compromise for those who are on the fence about cloth diapering. Even with using flushable liners, you still get to enjoy both the economical benefits and ecological benefits of cloth diapering. The Imse Vimse liners come in two sizes: baby and toddler. The baby size measures 7.6 in. X 10.9 in and comes in a roll of 200 liners. The toddler size measures 7.7 in. X 15.5 in. and comes in a roll of 100 liners. If you are interested in trying out the ImseVimse Flushable Liners, enter this week’s giveaway for your chance to win a FREE Baby roll!
