The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2013 is in TWO DAYS!!

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Who is excited for the Great Cloth Diaper Change this year?!? I know I am! Our local group has worked hard for MONTHS to ensure it will be an awesome event for all those attending on Saturday, April 20. And I am certain our local group is not alone in their efforts. Coordinators from all over the world have been working hard behind the scenes (on a completely volunteer basis) to make this year’s event extra special!

Currently there are “285 hosts registered to hold world record events in 17 countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Chile, Germany, Spain, Finland, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Mexico, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and the US”(The Great Cloth Diaper Change, 2013). How cool is that!!

What exactly is the Great Cloth Diaper Change? It’s an attempt to break the Guinness World Record of 8,251 cloth diapers changed around the world at one time…with lots of fun mixed in too! The main purpose of the event is to show the world that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s families. The Great Cloth Diaper Change is intentionally scheduled around Earth Day to let families know that cloth diapers are an important environmentally friendly choice they can make.

Looking to attend an event in your area? Check out the map on the Great Cloth Diaper Change website to find a location near you. Each host site will be changing diapers at 11:00am local time (as opposed to 2012 where the emphasis was on simultaneous diaper changes. That meant that some events happened at 2am…talked about dedicated cloth diapering mamas!).

Now when attending the event keep in mind that the goal is to make it into the Guinness Book of World Record. Therefore you might be surprised at how structured the diaper change portion of the event is…in order for everything to be official there are some general guidelines that must be followed. But no worries because the coordinators will know exactly what to do and give you instructions beforehand. All you need to do is show up with your baby in a cloth diaper and have a spare cloth diaper to change him/her into. If you have more than one child in diapers, you will need one adult for every child during the official count so be sure to plan accordingly.

Many of the sites will also have awesome prizes to raffle off, games for the kids, light refreshments, vendors/booths to shop at, and more. Hope you find a site near you so you can participate in all the fun and be a part of a World Record setting event! 🙂 Mom’s Milk Boutique is hosting the West Frankfort, IL site. Mom’s Milk Boutique will be host to the West Frankfort, IL site of an international cloth diaper changing event taking place on Saturday, April 20, 2013, two days before Earth Day. In its third year The Great Cloth Diaper Change event will attempt to break last year’s Guinness World Record of 8,251 cloth diapers changed around the world at one time.

“Each year billions of disposable diapers enter landfills where it takes hundreds of years for them to decompose, if ever,” says Heather McNamara, Executive Director of the Real Diaper Association. “Building off the success of last year’s event with 189 qualifying locations in 11 countries, we hope to show the entire world that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s modern families, particularly catching the eye of expecting and new parents who may be seeking more planet-friendly and affordable alternatives to disposable diapers.”

The West Frankfort event anticipates approximately 50 people to be in attendance. The event will take place at 11:00am on Saturday, April 20 at Mom’s Milk Boutique located at 601 S. Emma St. West Frankfort, IL 62896. About Mom’s Milk Boutique: Mom’s Milk Boutique was founded in 2007 by two sisters, Abbie and Bonnie, who were committed to natural, eco-friendly parenting products but felt frustrated at the lack of available resources and products in their hometown. Their solution? They opened an itty-bitty storefront in their small town of West Frankfurt, IL. Five years and a few babies later, they have a bigger retail space, carry a wide selection of products, and have an on-line store! Mom’s Milk Boutique has very high standards for what products they will carry and strives to offer them to costumers at the very best price possible…all while making it a fun place to shop! They offer free classes on cloth diapering, contests, giveaways, reward points, and much more! Abbie and Bonnie created something truly special when they opened Mom’s Milk Boutique. It’s more than simply a store; Mom’s Milk Boutique is a community that serves families both near and far.

About The Great Cloth Diaper Change: In its third year, The Great Cloth Diaper Change is an international initiative organized with the help of the nonprofit Real Diaper Association designed to show the world that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s families. The brainchild of Judy Aagard of Tiny Tots in California, Aagard says she came up with the idea in an effort to host a family event celebrating Earth Day. The Great Cloth Diaper Change has morphed into an exciting Guinness World Record breaking event, and in 2012, more than 8,251 babies were changed at one time. For more information visit

This event is part of a larger (and growing) movement to change the way parents think about diapering their babies. Participants may contribute $1 (or more) at any of the North American local event. The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2012!

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

If you are a cloth diapering family who wants to spread your love for fluff, you’ll definitely want to be a part of the Great Cloth Diaper Change 2012. What is the Great Cloth Diaper Change exactly?

On April 21, 2012 people from all over the WORLD are attempting to set a new record for the most cloth diapers changed at one time. The current Guinness World Record was set for in 2011 which included a total of 5,026 participants at 127 locations in 5 countries. This year’s event currently has 262 registered locations in 15 different countries so chances are a new world record will be set this year. Wouldn’t you like to be part of a record breaking event?

If you are interested in being included in the count, you will need to be at a registered location when changing your baby’s diaper. To find a registered location go to the Great Cloth Diaper Change website.  Mom’s Milk Boutique is hosting a registered site in Southern Illinois. You can also friend the locale site on Facebook.

You might be wondering, what’s the big deal about setting a record for changing diapers? The intent is to spread awareness and advocacy that cloth diapering is a viable option by demonstrating how many people all over the world are already committed to using cloth diapers. The event is supported by the Real Diaper Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that advocates for the use of reusable cloth diapers and by the Real Diaper Industry Association a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization that “strives to make reusable cloth diapers the primary choice for babies’ parents and caregivers while emphasizing responsibility and sustainability” (The Real Diaper Industry Association, 2012).

Additionally it’s sure to be a fun event where you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with like-minded families as well as see some super cute fluff! I’m actually thinking of purchasing a new diaper for my baby to wear to the event. I will be attending the one in Phoenix, AZ so if you happen to see me there, please say hello! 🙂

If you cannot attend a registered site in your area on April 21, perhaps you can participate in another event or activity during Real Diaper Week, April 16 through April 21, 2012. The theme for the week is “Real Simple. Real Diapers.” On the Great Cloth Diaper Change website you will find suggestions for advocacy and education activities regarding cloth diapering. And if you are unable to do any of the suggested activities, know that you are still doing your part simply by having your baby wear cloth diapers!

Cheers to setting a new world record together! Who’s with me?
