Who’s Who at Mom’s Milk Boutique: Meet Abbie!

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

There is sooo much that goes on behind the scenes to run a sucessful small, family owned business….in fact its kind of mind-boggling at times to think about all the aspects of it! Abbie, co-owner of Mom’s Milk Boutique, does a ton of “behind the scenes” work from overseas…all while homeschooling four kids! Yep, she’s kind of amazing, huh? Read on to learn about Abbie and her family…and to find out how many consecutive months she has been breastfeeding because that statistic alone is kind of astonishing! 馃檪

What is your title and role at MMB? How long have you been working there? Bonnie and I did this together. This idea for this shop came about when our second children were about 6 months old (Heidi and Ilana are two weeks apart). We were inspired. Bonnie has definitely been the one in the trenches. She’s there day to day making everything lovely happen. Since inception, I have worked on the website, accounting, buying inventory, advertising, and lots of social media. What do I do? Basically, I get to go on really big shopping sprees and think up crazy, good sales. Doing everything remotely can definitely be a challenge, especially now that I am 7 hours ahead of the store. Yet, Bonnie definitely touched on the people side. For 5 years, she and I have been on the phone聽e.v.e.r.y.d.a.y. Sometimes I call more than she wants聽me to. 馃檪聽

What is your top favorite product at MMB? Everything. All of them. I have to test one of everything. If I don’t like it, I don’t keep carrying it. If after using it for years I fall out of love, I clearance it.
But….if I had to choose just one, it would be my Bravado Seamless Silk Nursing Bra. I wear one every day (not the same one though for those that got worried).
At this very moment…..on my counter is a bottle of CJs Creamy Lotion in Caribbean Therapy Blend. In my bathroom washing wool there’s Naturally Luxe WOW Bar in Sandalwood Vanilla. In my shower – California Baby Tea Tree Shampoo & Conditioner. After bath its Episencial Soothing Cream. Hanging in my hall – Planet Wise Hanging Pail in Aqua Swirls. On my 18 month old – bumGenius Elemental in Mirror. I could go on. 馃檪

What is your favorite babycarrier and why? Impossible to choose. I love them all for different reasons and at different times. For newborns I love my Sakura Bloom Ring Slings and my Moby Wrap. When baby and I need more support we love our Dolcino or Calin Bleu woven wrap. For on the go, I grab both my ERGO and my Boba – my 4 year old loves to be carried, still. Last weekend, we went snowshoeing and Legend (18 mo.) stayed warm and comfy on daddy’s back in the ERGO – see a stroller do that!

What does your cloth diaper stash look like? Um, eclectic and embarrassingly large. I do reuse and lend out. At the moment, Bonnie has my newborn stash. I have been able to use many of the same diapers that I used for Heidi for Kaatje and Legend. My favorites are definitely more used. My doublers have holes. My prized Goodmamas and hemp Sloombs – that I stalked for DAYS over 4 years ago – need new elastic. As I said, I try everything. I guess I should add product tester to my list of (fun) jobs.

Who are the members of your family? My husband Seth (well, his job) is the reason I get to wake up every morning and drink my tea while gazing at the Alps. Well, for a few more months anyway. It’s amazing how 2 years will fly by. Then there are my wonderful and fortunately adaptable children Graeme (9), Heidi(6), Kaatje (4), and Legend (18 mo) who seem to be enjoying this adventure as much as we are.

What do you like to do for recreation? Travel, and all the adventure that comes with it, is definitely our kind of recreation. We homeschool and we live in Europe, so we have tried to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity and see everything we can whenever my husband gets a free moment. We are sunny beach weather people, so we love to swim and聽hike. Everything else depends on the weather, plus, with little ones we do a lot of things together. This winter we have had really good snow, so the kids have really gotten to enjoy skiing and the chocolat chaud.

Share a favorite family tradition: I have two. The first would be our names. My parents had five children whom they named in alphabetical order (Abbie, Bonnie, Cacie, Dominie and Ethan). We five children decided that we would continue that tradition when naming our own children starting with Bonnie when she had Faith, then my Graeme and Heidi, Bonnie’s Ilana, then my Kaatje and Legend, and on to M with Bonnie’s latest edition, Montgomery.

My 2nd favorite family tradition is my Great Grandma Hamilton’s Cinnamon Rolls. When at home for Christmas, my dad makes them, and I make them when away. They are delicious and have been enjoyed for generations during the Holidays. I am really blessed that my mom was so brilliant as to have her to right down the recipe some 30 years ago. Cherish your family moments and write your memories and stories down. Generations come and go far too quickly, but they can live and share a connection with our children in memories.

路 What is one tip you have for breastfeeding mamas? Support. Surround yourself with support, find a Le Leche League and attend regularly before, during and after! Make a community – make friends with other breastfeeding mamas. The connection of breastfeeding is reason enough to make great friends. High five each other in the mall and at restaurants. Get support and BE support because you are enough.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? What? I make milk. I have been lactating for聽80 months straight and my 18 month old still hasn’t night weaned. That I am still awake, is pretty darn super!

What is one of your favorite quotes? “The purpose of your life is far greater than your own聽personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness.” Rick Warren

What are your goals/intentions/resolutions for this new year? To make the life of everyone that touches MMB a little sweeter.

Who’s Who at Mom’s Milk Boutique: Meet Bonnie!

Monday, January 14th, 2013

If you have ever had the pleasure of shopping at Mom’s Milk Boutique in West Frankfort, IL then you have probably had the pleasure of meeting Bonnie in person! If you have ever ordered on-line or over the phone, then perhaps you have聽interacted with Bonnie? And of course if you are on facebook, you have certainly聽seen a picture聽or two聽of her and her adorable son working hard at MMB. 馃檪

Even though she’s聽constantly zooming around the store, she stopped for a moment to answer a few questions so you all could get to know her a little better! 馃檪

What is your title and role at MMB? How long have you been working there? I am the Co-Owner with my lovely sister, Abbie. It has been a trip! Whoever said “working with family is a bad idea” couldn’t be more wrong. Abbie and I have been driven closer together as sisters because of the store. The amount of time we spend speaking with each other is astronomically more than it would have been if we wouldn’t have begun this adventure together. She moved away for college while I was just coming into my “real” teens and life kept her away. We spoke occasionally but not enough. Our conversations were merely small talk. Moving from home, to Michigan, to Arizona, and now to Switzerland, distance would have been our enemy. But MMB has given us a bond with one another that cannot be matched. Over the last 5 1/2 years, I have loved every minute sharing this experience with her. We are truly blessed to have this opportunity and with out it, may have gone through this life never really “knowing” each other due to the distance.

What is your top favorite product at MMB? I don’t believe that to be a fair question. 馃槈 However, given my 5 month old’s current speed bump in life, I would have to say the Amber Teething Necklaces and Bracelets! Oh my goodness how they have been a life saver for us. We have cut our two bottom front teeth and working on the top. We have them on ALL.THE.TIME.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why? Again, a hard one. Each carrier has a special place in my heart. I LOVED the Sakura slings during our newborn stage! It was so easy to put on, get him in, and take him out, and take it off. But right now, I am addicted to the Boba. It has great support, a high back for Gummy, and the prints are adorable!

What does your cloth diaper stash look like? Wow, well….I got a lot of Abbie’s preloved diapers from Kaatje and Legend. So my diaper stash looks PRELOVED, LOL. I have SO many different styles. Mostly older diapers from like 3 years ago. I have a few new that I have added to the bunch, like wool and fitteds…by far my favorites!

Who are the members of your family? I suppose you want me to stick with my immediate family and not, sisters, brother, mom, dad, Grandma…. 馃槈 I have an amazing husband, Theo (Theodore) whom did I say was amazing? This guy, I tell you, a woman couldn’t ask for better. I have two girls, Faith (10) and Ilana (6). Faith is the sweetest child you will ever meet and Ilana…well, she is a firecracker. We just recently added Lil Gummy (Mongomery) who is getting ready to hit the big 6 Monther in 2 weeks. The girls absolutely adore him and are such a wonderful help. He has been a hoot. It is so different already with a boy. I can tell I am going to have my hands full with this lil guy!

What do you like to do for recreation? Recreation? I wish I had some awesome story for you on this one. Alas, we are a kind of boring family, a little laid back and enjoy our quiet evenings together. Theo’s a farmer so that takes up a LOT of our time and vacations don’t come easy. However, in the summer we enjoy a day at the lake, tubing, skiing, swimming. So there it must be. Our recreation is the Lake; which is only fun in the summer…during the fall and winter we hibernate.

Share a favorite family tradition: Again, I will have to say Sunday’s at the Lake is my favorite tradition.

What is one tip you have for breastfeeding mamas? Mind over matter. If you THINK and believe you aren’t enough, guess what, you won’t be. We are our biggest enemy. Just like you can talk yourself into being scared of the dark, you can talk yourself into not making enough milk. We as women are run by our emotions and hormones. When we convince ourselves that we are going to have problems, we are going to have problems. I highly recommend standing in front of your bathroom mirror, grab hold, gently squeeze, and yell, “I AM WOMAN! I AM ENOUGH! WATCH ME NURSE!” Nothing like a good pep talk session to start the day off right.

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences? This may sound crazy, but I don’t enjoy “me” time alone. I hate being alone. I get bored. I want to talk, and talking to myself is too rhetorical for my liking.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? I would like to have Superhuman Speed. I want to get things done FAST! I want to get places FAST! And then, I want to be able to slow it back down while I’m enjoying family, friends, and life. But all that work stuff, all that getting there stuff…that needs to happen quick.

What is one of your favorite quotes? “A person’s a person no matter how small.” I think Dr. Seuss had life pretty much figured out.

What are your goals/intentions/resolutions for this new year? Don’t get behind!

Thanks Bonnie! So great to get聽to know a little more about you and your family…and I LOVE your suggestion about standing in聽front of the mirror and giving yourself a pep talk! It’s聽happy visual to think of women actually doing that for themselves! 馃檪

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Andrea’s Family

Friday, November 16th, 2012

I am excited to feature Andrea’s awesome family of SIX for this week’s Friday Family Spotlight! Read on to learn more about their upcoming mission trip to Guatemala!

Who are the members of your family?

Our family is now even, as our kids say. There are 3 girls and 3 boys. My husband Jeremy and I have been married 8 wonderful years! Which leads to the four funniest kids you will ever meet- Harrison (7 years), Nell (5 years), Mitchell (4 years) and Meredith (3 months). Seeing the way the “big kids” all interact with Meredith has been amazing. They absolutely love having a baby around the house… just wait till she starts crawling and taking their toys though .

How did you meet your significant other?

Jeremy and I met at Minnesota State Universtiy Mankato. We were both involved in Catholic Newman Center- the on-campus church. Most of our time dating revolved around that place- we would study together at Newman, go to Sunday church services together and so on. Our date nights ended up being on Wednesday nights when we went to teach faith formation at a near-by church. Nothing like seeing the the other persons true colors as when they are surrounded by a group of rowdy 6th grade boys.

What do you and your family like to do for recreation?

We love to be outside! Living in Minnesota our weather varies so much that our recreation varies as well. In the summer we are out on the pontoon, swimming and having bonfires 3 to 4 days a week. In the winter we go sledding, skating and my husband takes the kids ice fishing.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why?

Our favorite carrier is for sure the Becco Gemini. Meredith loves being with us everywhere we go and the Becco is so comfy for both her and I.

What is the best and worst parenting advice you have ever been given?

The best parenting advice I ever got is easy “The end goal is Heaven not Harvard.” I call to that quote often when things get overly busy and try to simplify. Between ski lessons, choir practice, school, tennis lessons, homework and so on- its so easy to loose sight of the importance of what truly matters to us as Christians- loving, serving and sharing with others about Christ. Trying to keep the family focused can be a challenge sometimes. The worst advice would be “You need to stop cuddling that baby so much. You’re going to spoil him/her.” I have heard that almost every time I had a newborn from some well meaning stranger. Sorry- cuddling away here! They are only babies for a short time.

What goals do you have for your family in the next year or two?

My husband and I travel leading mission trips for the teens and adults for our church. Last year my husband was able to bring our Kindergarten son to San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala to the mission we serve at. He came back a changed little kid- humbled by the poor he was able to serve and thrilled to share stories with his classmates about camping on top of a volcano one night. We promised ourselves that we would make it a priority to take the kids down to the San Lucas Mission every 1-2 years. Our trip with all the kids is scheduled for Easter 2014.

Share a pecial family tradition you have:

My husband and I both recalled having bedtime prayers and stories with our mothers. We agreed that that could be a special time for Jeremy, as a father, to share with himself and the kids. So every night they gather in the boys room for story, prayer and song. It melts my heart to listen outside the door and hear them sing “Jesus, I adore you and I lay my life before you. How I love you!” every night.

What is one of your favorite quotes?

The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness. 鈥 Pope Benedict XVI . I love this quote! We try to already, at such young ages, to talk about this and ask the kids what God might have planned for them. Nell, our 5 year old, last week was having a hard time talking through her future plans, post election. “I don’t think I can wait to be president when聽I grow up. Changes need to happen soon. I might just have to be the first Student President. I’m already pretty busy right now though but maybe if I skip skiing this winter I can fit it in.” Aim high right?

Thanks Andrea for sharing your beautiful family with us! We wish you guys the very best!!

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet The Sheppard Family

Friday, September 21st, 2012

I am so excited to introduce you to our very FIRST family featured on our Friday Family Spotlight! What makes the Sheppard Family unique? Read on to learn more about them!

Who are the members of your family?
My husband is Kris. He is a graphic designer for a high-end grocery chain in southern CA and dreams of becoming a full-time magician. He currently works 2 nights a week at local restaurants performing table side magic. I’m Megan and I am blessed enough to be a stay-at-home mommy. In addition to the usual tasks of trying to keep the house presentable and the residents fed, I am also trying to earn some extra money by sewing folk costumes for a heritage group we belong to. We have two children. Three-year-old Ginny (Genevieve) is very spirited and keeps me hopping. She just started ballet and Awanas (a church club), but isn’t sure she likes either of them because Mommy isn’t sitting right next to her the whole time. Seven-month-old Kit (Kristoffer) also goes by “Mr. Happy Pants.” The most frequent comments we get about him are “He’s so cute!” and “He’s such a happy guy!” Kit always has a smile on his face and is a seriously easy baby – nice after Ginny’s difficult babyhood! Also living in the house are my parents (it’s their house) and my younger-but-still-an-adult brother. Oh, and 7 cats. Can’t forget the cats. It’s crowded, but we’re making it work.

How did you meet your significant other?
Kris and I met in January 2005 when he joined the Christian rock band I’d been playing with for 5 years. We were both immediately attracted to each other and after a serious discussion one night after a show, decided we were both on the same page regarding what we were looking for in a relationship and began dating. He was my first long-term boyfriend, and my first kiss. 馃檪 We were engaged in February 2006 and married that August.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why?
My Ergo! I bought it while I was pregnant with my daughter and am still using it heavily with my son. I love how quickly I can put it on, how easy it is to adjust while wearing baby, and how easy it is to get him out of it. I also love how long I can use it. I’ve been using it since birth with my son and still occasionally throw my 3 year old in it. I will admit, I haven’t figured out nursing in it, but that hasn’t been much of a problem with my champion nurser. My Ergo is starting to look faded and worn, so I suspect a new one will be “needed” with the next baby.

Describe your cloth diaper stash:
It’s a varied stash. With my daughter, I exclusively used BumGenius 3.0s for her first year, then switched to Flips exclusively. I think I have like 8 different brands with my son! And we hardly use the Flips at all. I prefer pockets or all in ones right now; they seem to be the easiest to use with him. About half my stash is Cotton Babies products. My favorites change regularly. Tuttos were my favorites 3 months ago and right now they are my least favorites. My current most used diapers are my ones&twos (I have 2) and my Fuzzibunz size small (just 1). He’s almost outgrown the small though, and doesn’t really fit well in the medium, so I’m sure that favorite will be changing again soon. I’ve had a lot of fun expanding my stash, and I’ve learned a lot too. For example, deal sites diapers should be avoided! (Unless of course they are well-known brands). I’ve tried 5 different brands off of deal sites, and only 2 have been any good.

What goals do you have for your family in the next year or two?
We’re finally going to become home-owners! The last two years have been spent with my little family living in one room in my parents’ house while we tried to pay off our debts and save for a house. We have one debt to go right now and then will be able to start saving our down payment. As it stands right now, we should be able to start hunting for a house in May. I can’t wait! It’ll be soooooo nice to have space of our own to spread out in. I suppose that’s really our only goal for right now. It’ll be quite an adjustment, since we lived in a tiny apartment previously and got rid of most our belongings when we moved in with my parents. We’ll be moving into a house with only a refrigerator, a few bookcases, a rocking chair and a cedar chest as far as furniture goes.

What has been your toughest challenge as a mom so far?
Parenting my spirited daughter and the societal pressure that goes with it. Other people can be very judgmental about your parenting methods, and especially with a spirited child, you find yourself doing things that go against the norm. We’ve struggled with bedtime, speech, and separation anxiety. I held my daughter through all her naps when she was small because it was the only way to get her to sleep more than 5 minutes, and life was easier with a well-rested child. Once when we had her on a harness at Disneyland, I had another mom in a line staring me down every time we passed each other. I can only assume she didn’t approve of our leash, and had never had a child who would suddenly bolt from your side in a crowded place. Parenting seems to be the one thing everyone feels they can do better than you.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I’d like to be able to freeze time. Imagine how much I could accomplish (or not!) if I had nobody demanding food or attention!

Thanks a bunch Megan for sharing about your family! I love, LOVE that your hubby聽is a聽magician…how fun!! 馃檪

If you would like your family to be featured in a future Friday Family Spotlight send an email to sarah@momsmilkboutique.com with the subject line “Friday Family Spotlight Inquiry” and include an interesting fact about your family in the email. If your family is selected to be featured, you will receive a $10 gift card from Mom’s Milk Boutique!
