Nighttime Diapering Solutions

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014

Nighttime Diapering SolutionsWhen deciding to cloth diaper, I was most nervous about cloth diapering at night. But it’s not hard, especially when you find a nighttime diaper that works.

Below are a few ideas of nighttime diaper solutions from our team of bloggers:

  • Kawaii Heavy Wetters– These one-sized pocket diapers consist of a waterproof outer cover and two extra large microfiber inserts.  Add a hemp or bamboo insert for extra absorbency.
  • Sloomb Overnight Bamboo Fitteds with Wool Cover The overnight bamboo fitted includes a shell with a double-length three-layer snap-in fleece soaker that can be folded for customizable absorption. Pair with a wool cover for overnight success.
  • AIO with Micro Fleece Insert and a Thirsties Fleece InsertThere are many different AIO diapers out there; you can try this with one you have in your stash and add the inserts for the extra absorbency you need at night.
  • EconappisThis pocket diaper is one sized and designed to work from 10-35 pounds. It comes with two inserts made with a blend of organic cotton and bamboo. You can add your own inserts for custom absorbency.
  • Elementals(Old Style)-BumGenuis’ AIO diaper; they have a new design, but one mom prefers the old version for her nighttime diapers.
  • Bummis Premium Sized Prefold with Infant sized prefold inside-These prefolds are made out of cotton and can be paired with a Bummis or wool cover.
  • Toddler prefold with a bamboo or hemp doubler inside with wool or Bummis cover- This is similar to the option above but the user combines a cotton prefold with the wool or hemp doubler for a different option.

You might be able to go through your existing stash and put together one of these ideas to try on your baby tonight.  Most of the ideas above included some form of hemp or bamboo liner or a wool cover. Keep in mind there are different wash routines for prepping the various fabrics, and your wool should be washed separately always. Do you have a nighttime diaper solution that works well?  If so, please share with us!

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Emily’s Family

Friday, December 21st, 2012

I have a feeling you are really going to enjoy meeting Emily and her family. They have some super fun and exciting adventures ahead….read on to learn more about what’s in store for them over the next few years!

Who are the members of your family?

My family includes Chris (31), Emily (28), Henrik (2), Petra (4 months).. (and Romeo, our 8 year old pomeranian)

How did you meet your significant other?
My husband and I started dating 2 weeks before I left for a summer study program in Aix-en-Provence, France. He was leaving around the same time to do his first Half Ironman in Austria. We were so smitten with each other, we decided to make our love work. I met him in Zagreb, Croatia, just after his Ironman, and we spent 4 amazing days visiting the coast of Slovenia, and Venice as well. He flew to Paris to meet me (6 weeks into our relationship) and proposed to me on the top of the Eiffel Tower! Later that summer, he made the trip over the ocean once more to meet me in Holland, where my sister lives. We started dating in May, and were married the following August!

What is your favorite Mom’s Milk Boutique Product?
That’s a tough question, because I love everything at Mom’s Milk Boutique. However, CJ’s BUTTer is one product I plan on using throughout their cloth diapering years. If I happen to see a little redness, usually one or two small applications of CJ’s clears it right up! I also use it preventatively and their skin is usually perfect.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why?
We just splurged on an Ergo this past Black-Friday. It is beyond wonderful! I had such back pain from hauling my babies around (often both at once), and now I am totally back pain-free! It will make traveling with a baby MUCH easier.

Describe your cloth diaper stash:
I have such a mix! This is my second stash, and I am very happy with it. I have about 30 prefolds, used with Flip, Bummis, Econobum, Happy Heinys, and Kawaii diaper covers! (whew!) Also, we have some Bumgenius All in ones and pockets. We have a couple Imse Vimse swim diapers too, which we’ll put to use next month!

What goals do you have for your family in the next year or two?
We actually are headed on quite an adventure! This December 31st, we leave for Costa Rica, where we plan to live for 3 months to a full year. We’d really like to master Spanish before leaving Central/South America, so we might go to Chile next. We also plan to spend a few months (at least) in Prague, Budapest, and the south of France. As mentioned, I have family in Holland, so we’d love to spend some time there as well. My husband works from home, and I’m a stay-at-home mom, so why not travel before the little ones reach school-age?

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences?
I don’t really get much “me” time, but if I do, I try to take luxury in simple things, like a hot bath or a walk with my dog, Romeo. If I find myself lucky enough to get both kids to bed before 9pm, my husband and I might cuddle up and watch a romantic comedy.

What’s your number one secret for stretching a dollar?
Well, I save a lot of money by providing a healthy diet for my family. I exclusively breastfeed my babies (so that saves a ton!), visit my local farm for cheaper, and better produce, and cook most days instead of going out. For “dates” with my husband, we often cook a nice meal together and share a bottle of sparkling cider. 😉

Thanks a bunch Emily for sharing your family with us!! We wish you the very best on your upcoming travels!! Also if you would like to follow Emily’s family on their adventures be sure to check out her blog at http://www.mommybluebird.com/.

Sunday Funday Giveaway | Bummis Newborn Pack – the Perfect Newborn Diaper

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

How do you diaper a newborn? What diapers will fit under the cord? Pictured above is my one week old 7 lb. daughter. Newborn prefolds are quite possible the perfect 1st diaper – they fit great and our relatively inexpensve!

If you are pregnant and want to start cloth diapering from day one, I think you will be excited about this week’s giveaway! It’s for a Bummis Newborn Pack. The Bummis Newborn Pack includes 12 organic pre-fold inserts and two newborn wraps. This diaper pack is designed specifically for newborns so it fits babies from 5- 9 lbs. Most cloth diapers, even in the smallest size, are geared for babies 10lbs and up, so this diaper pack really is unique. It is a great set to get you through the first several weeks of diapering your newborn!

Save the small size or one-sized cloth diapers for when they will actually fit baby properly because a proper fitting diaper makes a world of difference in how well it contains everything…in other words you’ll experience far less leaks or blowouts when the fit it right.

Considering how many diapers you go through with a newborn, the Bummis Newborn Pack is definitely worth the investment. Additionally once the pre-folds no longer fit, you can use them as a liner or doubler for almost any diaper. If you would like to win a Bummis Newborn Pack for your itty-bitty baby (or to gift to a friend) simply follow the instructions below.

Sarah’s Top 3 Favorite Cloth Diapers

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

We decided to switch to cloth diapers when my first son was 7 months old. I had been curious about cloth for quite some time but was overwhelmed by all the choices. My solution? Try a little bit of everything! Over the course of cloth diapering 3 kids in the last 4+ years I have experimented with many different cloth diapers. My husband teases me that we’re not actually going to save money using cloth diapers if I keep buying them. But the truth is cloth diapers are addicting! I have a hard time resisting the cuteness of baby butt fluff. At this point my stash is quite eclectic as but I definitely have my favorites. Here’s my top 3 choices for cloth diapers:

Pre-folds and Bummis Covers:
These make the perfect newborn diapering system which unfortunately I didn’t discover until my third son. Truthfully they intimidated me. Therefore I make a point to publically proclaim my love for prefolds so other moms don’t miss out on their fabulousness! I seriously did not experience any leaks or blowouts with my prefolds and Bummis covers. And we all know newborn breastmilk poops can be quite explosive; but Bummis are definitely up for the challenge! I was usually able to use the same cover for a couple diaper changes, as long as it didn’t get poop on it. Besides being easy to use, easy to clean, and an all-around great diaper, prefolds and Bummis covers are a cheaper investment than some of the other available newborn diapering systems. This is beneficial because newborns grow so fast! I prefer to invest in a pricier system for the older infant/toddler years of diapering. A sufficient newborn stash would include approximately 30 prefolds and 8 covers. That would easily get you through two days with plenty left over to use while laundering the dirty dipes on the third day. Depending on what fold you use, you may also want to get a few Snappis.

Thirsties
I have the old school, version 1 Thirsties AIOs and love them dearly! They are super trim yet keep everything well contained. You have the option to stuff them with an extra liner but I never do…even as an overnight diaper they do just fine on their own. There have been a few changes made to Thirsties since I purchased mine a few years back. The new version is called Thirstes Duo Diapers. They come in two sizes and can be adjusted with snaps. They also come in super cute prints! My favorite is Blackbird. A few additional improvements have been made and I am eager to try them out. I am already so in love with the Thirsties brand I am wondering how it could be improved upon? I think I’ll have to order some to find out.

Bumgenius 4.0
These diapers really are genius! My experience with them has been completely positive. They are one of the more reasonably priced pocket diapers on the market; however they truly are an excellent, high-quality choice cloth diaper. They are a one-size diaper so they are likely to fit your child from birth through potty training, again making it a worthwhile investment. I personally prefer the hook and loop closure over the snap closure (I find snaps cumbersome with diapering a busy toddler who wants to do everything but lay still while you change their diaper), however snaps do tend to hold up longer and stay cleaner.

Here’s what I’m drooling over and want in my stash:
• Thirsties Duo Diaper in Blackbird and Hoot

• Bummis Super Brite Diaper Cover in Orange and Green

• Ecoposh recycled Organic One Size fitted. I have never tried these nor do I know anyone who uses them…they sound super cool! The Ginger is my favorite color.

• And while I’m dreaming up the perfect stash it would also include some Planet Wise Wetbags. Their prints are beautiful! Yes, I am referring to something that holds dirty diapers as beautiful. Haha!

Now to convince hubs we need more cloth. And have a baby girl so I can pick out some fun girlie fluff!

What’s in your stash? What’s your favorite cloth diaper?
