Here at Mom’s Milk Boutique, we source only 100 percent Baltic Amber to sell in our store–we know you are counting on it! Baltic amber is effective for pain relief, strengthening your immune system, restoring natural energy, and relief of chronic inflammation. So how is it made?

-007First, our production team personally selects the best raw materials. Each piece that we buy is checked for quality and inspected by the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania so that we can be certified by the Ministry as selling genuine Baltic Amber.

After each piece is inspected for quality and the best materials are selected, our trained workers hand-cut it into the desired shapes. Next, the darker colors are strengthened in a machine, and the amber is then sorted and separated.

-013To clean the amber, we use a process called wet polishing, in which quartz sand is used to polish the amber and remove any dirt. The longer it says in the wet polish stage, the more round and shiny the amber becomes. Then, the amber is dry-polished with special wood or ceramic beads.

Then, all the amber is washed to remove the residues from the wet and dry polishing stages. No chemicals are used, and all the amber is washed by hand. After the amber dries, it’s sorted by color: cherry, dark cherry, green/earth, lemon, honey, cognac, and milky/butter.  -019

Once the beads are sorted, our master craftsmen drill the holes in the beads. Drilling is an important step in the process, since holes must be drilled straight through the beads to make them strong and long-lasting.

Finally, the beads are threaded and knotted by hand. The quality of an amber necklace can be determined by the gaps between the beads and the knots. A quality necklace will have small knots and small gaps between the knot and bead. The clasp goes on last.

-009

We inspect each and every piece of amber jewelry for quality to ensure that the beads are not cracked or broken and that they are all the right shape, color and weight; that the gaps between the knots and beads are small, and that the clasps are secured the right way.

Each and every necklace is unique and has a different look. There are no two necklaces the same. They beautiful necklaces are created for children and for adults.

The completed necklaces are just stunning…..

Who’s Who at Mom’s Milk Boutique: Meet Bonnie!

Monday, January 14th, 2013

If you have ever had the pleasure of shopping at Mom’s Milk Boutique in West Frankfort, IL then you have probably had the pleasure of meeting Bonnie in person! If you have ever ordered on-line or over the phone, then perhaps you have interacted with Bonnie? And of course if you are on facebook, you have certainly seen a picture or two of her and her adorable son working hard at MMB. 🙂

Even though she’s constantly zooming around the store, she stopped for a moment to answer a few questions so you all could get to know her a little better! 🙂

What is your title and role at MMB? How long have you been working there? I am the Co-Owner with my lovely sister, Abbie. It has been a trip! Whoever said “working with family is a bad idea” couldn’t be more wrong. Abbie and I have been driven closer together as sisters because of the store. The amount of time we spend speaking with each other is astronomically more than it would have been if we wouldn’t have begun this adventure together. She moved away for college while I was just coming into my “real” teens and life kept her away. We spoke occasionally but not enough. Our conversations were merely small talk. Moving from home, to Michigan, to Arizona, and now to Switzerland, distance would have been our enemy. But MMB has given us a bond with one another that cannot be matched. Over the last 5 1/2 years, I have loved every minute sharing this experience with her. We are truly blessed to have this opportunity and with out it, may have gone through this life never really “knowing” each other due to the distance.

What is your top favorite product at MMB? I don’t believe that to be a fair question. 😉 However, given my 5 month old’s current speed bump in life, I would have to say the Amber Teething Necklaces and Bracelets! Oh my goodness how they have been a life saver for us. We have cut our two bottom front teeth and working on the top. We have them on ALL.THE.TIME.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why? Again, a hard one. Each carrier has a special place in my heart. I LOVED the Sakura slings during our newborn stage! It was so easy to put on, get him in, and take him out, and take it off. But right now, I am addicted to the Boba. It has great support, a high back for Gummy, and the prints are adorable!

What does your cloth diaper stash look like? Wow, well….I got a lot of Abbie’s preloved diapers from Kaatje and Legend. So my diaper stash looks PRELOVED, LOL. I have SO many different styles. Mostly older diapers from like 3 years ago. I have a few new that I have added to the bunch, like wool and fitteds…by far my favorites!

Who are the members of your family? I suppose you want me to stick with my immediate family and not, sisters, brother, mom, dad, Grandma…. 😉 I have an amazing husband, Theo (Theodore) whom did I say was amazing? This guy, I tell you, a woman couldn’t ask for better. I have two girls, Faith (10) and Ilana (6). Faith is the sweetest child you will ever meet and Ilana…well, she is a firecracker. We just recently added Lil Gummy (Mongomery) who is getting ready to hit the big 6 Monther in 2 weeks. The girls absolutely adore him and are such a wonderful help. He has been a hoot. It is so different already with a boy. I can tell I am going to have my hands full with this lil guy!

What do you like to do for recreation? Recreation? I wish I had some awesome story for you on this one. Alas, we are a kind of boring family, a little laid back and enjoy our quiet evenings together. Theo’s a farmer so that takes up a LOT of our time and vacations don’t come easy. However, in the summer we enjoy a day at the lake, tubing, skiing, swimming. So there it must be. Our recreation is the Lake; which is only fun in the summer…during the fall and winter we hibernate.

Share a favorite family tradition: Again, I will have to say Sunday’s at the Lake is my favorite tradition.

What is one tip you have for breastfeeding mamas? Mind over matter. If you THINK and believe you aren’t enough, guess what, you won’t be. We are our biggest enemy. Just like you can talk yourself into being scared of the dark, you can talk yourself into not making enough milk. We as women are run by our emotions and hormones. When we convince ourselves that we are going to have problems, we are going to have problems. I highly recommend standing in front of your bathroom mirror, grab hold, gently squeeze, and yell, “I AM WOMAN! I AM ENOUGH! WATCH ME NURSE!” Nothing like a good pep talk session to start the day off right.

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences? This may sound crazy, but I don’t enjoy “me” time alone. I hate being alone. I get bored. I want to talk, and talking to myself is too rhetorical for my liking.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? I would like to have Superhuman Speed. I want to get things done FAST! I want to get places FAST! And then, I want to be able to slow it back down while I’m enjoying family, friends, and life. But all that work stuff, all that getting there stuff…that needs to happen quick.

What is one of your favorite quotes? “A person’s a person no matter how small.” I think Dr. Seuss had life pretty much figured out.

What are your goals/intentions/resolutions for this new year? Don’t get behind!

Thanks Bonnie! So great to get to know a little more about you and your family…and I LOVE your suggestion about standing in front of the mirror and giving yourself a pep talk! It’s happy visual to think of women actually doing that for themselves! 🙂

Product Review: Baltic Amber Necklace

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

I first learned about Baltic Amber when my second son was a few months old. I was eager to try it out because it sounded like a fairly easy way to provide comfort to a teething baby. Plus, I won’t lie, the cuteness factor appealed to me too. 🙂

It seemed everywhere we went people would comment on his necklace. My oldest son became a little jealous of all the attention his younger brother got from wearing an amber necklace. He asked me if he could have one too. Sure, why not? There are supposed benefits beyond teething and no potential harmful effects of amber. I honored his request and got him a necklace that matched his brother.

Once both boys had necklaces, then we really got a lot of attention! People would inquire about them all.the.time (even during super inconvenient times, like when I was pushing a shopping cart full of groceries while simultaneously carrying a screaming baby and chasing after a busy toddler, some old lady wants to chat about amber…um, was she really that unaware it was not a good time for me to talk?, lol!).

On most occasions I could (and would) share a quick explanation of the benefits of amber. This almost always resulted in people asking me if they actually worked. Honestly at that point, I wasn’t really sure? My older son was well beyond teething so I wasn’t able to gage that particular benefit with him. While my second son was in the thick of teething, it was a pretty mild teething experience overall with him; perhaps due to the necklace? It was hard to say for sure? So I decided I should get one for myself so I could experience the effects of amber first hand.

The very first day I wore my necklace I honestly felt amazing. I even remember a friend commenting to me how “peppy” I looked and I told her “I swear it’s the necklace. I put it on this morning and have felt great ever since!”. I was completely convinced that amber really did have healing properties to it.

3.5 years and several more amber necklaces later, I am still feelin’ the love for amber! I wear one almost daily. One area in particular that I feel amber is especially beneficial to me is with my running. I experience very little aches, pains, or inflammation despite running an average of 30+ miles a week. Even after some pretty long and grueling trail runs, I experience very little soreness.

Currently Izzy (20 months) is wearing two amber necklaces. Just this evening when his mouth was wide open, my oldest son happen to notice that Izzy is getting two new teeth. And guess what? He is showing virtually no signs of teething! Don’t know about you but I’ll take that for a teething toddler any day!! 🙂

The main curiosity about Baltic Amber seems to be the question of effectiveness. People want to know if it actually “works”. All I can say to answer that is, I believe it does! 🙂

Sunday Funday Giveaway: Baltic Amber Children’s Necklace

Sunday, November 11th, 2012

Surely you have seen those adorable, earthy-looking, necklaces that many cloth-diapering, breastfeeding, and babywearing mamas use? Ever wonder what the scoop is on those? They are actually necklaces made from Baltic Amber.

What is Baltic Amber? It’s a fossilized tree resin that has a high concentration of succinic acid. Okay, well now you are probably wondering what is succinic acid? It’s a powerful anti-oxidant that can protect and heal our body. It helps restore energy, provide pain relief, reduce inflammation, and maintain overall wellness.

Baltic Amber has shown to be effective in providing comfort to teething babies; although the necklace doesn’t actually go into baby’s mouth. Rather by wearing the necklace, the succinic acid gets absorbed into the skin through contact. Some parents are concerned about the safety of amber teething necklaces. While adult supervision while baby wears necklace is strongly recommended, the necklaces are designed with two key safety features:

  • The thread is knotted after each bead so if the strand should break, loose beads will not scatter everywhere
  • The clasp is designed and tested to release if excessive force is applied to the necklace.

Would you like to win a Baltic Amber Necklace for your little one? Enter this week’s giveaway below! Winner will be announced on Sunday, November 18. Winner will be notified via email and is asked to respond within 48 hours to claim their prize.

Good luck mamas!

Fan Photo Friday: Favorite Fluff!

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Let’s start with a picture of one of my favorite little 9-month-olds in his one size Rumparooz (which he’s had since he was a newborn). This is not my son, but he is someone who is near and dear to my heart so I am happy to show off his fluffy bum to you all! 🙂 In this picture he’s doing his new favorite thing…crawling and keeping his mama busy chasing after him.

This next picture cracked me up when I opened it up. This is 18 month old Carissa. While her mom was busy cleaning lipstick off the couch, she thought she would help dunk the diapers! Love the innocent look on her sweet face!

This is Bri’s 6 month old daughter “PeeWee”. Bri didn’t have a lot of fluffy bum pictures to choose from because according to Mom, PeeWee is an all (fully clothed) or nothing (naked) kinda girl. However in this picture she’s showing off her a WAHM diaper in an adorable monkey print.

This is Mary’s 8 month old daughter in an AppleCheeks size 2, Purple Rain lined with an OsoCozy better fit pad folded. Seriously could she be ANY cuter!!  Her squishy cheeks and little hair bow put a smile on my face! Also can’t help but notice the beautiful dress that her mama knitted for her (actually I’m kind of drooling over it…I want to be able to knit little girlie clothing although I need a daughter and better knitting skills first, lol:) ).

And last but not least here’s my little dude at 9 months old in two of my very favorite diapers. They are custom-made WAHM pocket diapers.

I loved all the pictures. A big thank you to everyone who participated. This week’s winner is Mary…Yeah Mary!! 25 Milk Miles will be deposited into your account shortly. 🙂

Okay ready for next week’s Fan Photo Friday?
