Pregnancy Week 25: Horrible Headaches

Pregnancy Week 25: Horrible HeadachesI love being pregnant. Even the little aches and pains don’t really bother me. But lately, I have been having crazy headaches. I am not sure if I should blame the Indiana weather, caffeine withdrawal, or the growing baby in my growing belly.

What causes headaches in pregnancy?

According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnancy hormones and an increase in the volume of blood pumping through your body can cause headaches in early pregnancy. Other causes of early headaches could be stress, changes in vision, and even poor posture. I am guilty there! As your pregnancy progresses, the condition of preeclampsia could also be to blame for an increase of headaches.

How to handle the pain:

The easiest way to take care of a headache when you aren’t pregnant is to take a medication like Tylenol. Acetaminophen is okay to take during pregnancy, but medications like ibuprofen and migraine medications aren’t. Be sure to talk to your doctor or midwife if you are concerned and can’t seem to get the pain to subside.

Here are some easy fixes:

  • Drink water. Dehydration is a common cause of headaches.
  • Apply heat or cold in the form or a compress to the problem area.
  • Don’t let yourself get too hungry. Take care of you.
  • Relax! Get some exercise or try making time for a pregnancy massage.
  • Take a warm bath or shower.
  • Take a few minutes to meditate or sit in a dark room and just be still.

Many women suffer from migraines during pregnancy. While I have my share of awful headaches, most of these easy fixes or some acetaminophen will help. Women who suffer from migraines can avoid certain foods such as chocolate, yogurt, and even sour cream to help keep migraines at bay.

Whatever the cause, headaches are one of the not-so-pleasant side effects of pregnancy for many women. It seems to help me to just relax, take a few minutes to take some deep breaths, and be still. What about you momma? How do you take care of headaches in pregnancy?
