I Only Have Eyes for Fluff!

“Do I have too many diapers?”

Kellista's StashIf you have a shopping habit and use cloth diapers, there has probably been a time when you have asked yourself that question. We have all read the articles telling us to be prepared with at least 24-36 diapers and seen the packages sold in sets of 12 or 24. So why is it that many cloth diapering moms have a stash in excess of 50 cloth diapers? Why do so many of us continue to shop for new diapers when we have enough to last at least two days? Are we obsessed?

These are questions I often ask myself when I’m stuffing my pockets or folding my pretty fitteds after a night of dreaming about cloth diapers. Yes, I do dream about cloth diapers. Can buying diapers become an addiction?

Here’s a short quiz to find out if you’re diaper obsessed.

1. Do you have any cloth diaper stores bookmarked on your browser?
2. Do you think, if only I had “fill in the blank” diaper, I’d be happy?
3. Do you fantasize about winning the lottery and spending a chunk of your funds on diapers?
4. Have you thought of opening a cloth diaper store just so you can be surrounded by pretty, new fluff?
5. Have you thought of or planned a vacation just to use a new diaper system?
6. Have you considered having another child to be able to buy more diapers?
7. Does the thought of your child potty training make you sad (not because thPackage Deliveryey’re growing up, but because there will be no more use for your fluff)?
8. Are you fans of more than one cloth diaper company or store on facebook? More than 2? 3?
9. Do you stalk your postman?
10.When a birthday or holiday approaches and someone asks you what you want, do diapers pop in your head?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you could be a diaper addict. If you answered yes to all of them, we could be best friends.

So here’s my best advice for those of you who are diaper obsessed. First, make sure you are buying diapers you will actually use. There is nothing worse than diapers that just sit on a shelf. Even with a huge stash, make sure you are rotating through all your diapers. If there are diapers that you don’t reach for often, resell them on sites like Diaper Swappers or Mom’s Milk Boutique’s Diaper Buy Back program. Then you will have more funds for new fluff, which we all know you’ll buy!

Second, spread your love of fluffy shopping to other items. Do you have a niece with a birthday coming up? Could your little one use another teething toy? You would be surprised how much our obsession with buying diapers just comes from the excitement at getting something fun in the mail. I have noticed if I buy something online that I need anyway, it keeps me from buying fluff I really don’t need.

Finally, don’t break the bank. Chances are there are things around your house you are not using. Sell these things and use the funds to support your habit. You don’t want your significant other coming after you for spending the grocery money on fluffy. Shop smart, look for sales and happy diapering!

The thought of my 3 year old getting interested in potty learning is now getting to be a magnificent daydream. and the day he does I will through a HUGE party and dance all day long. lol! I might be a shade sad when I pass on all of our fluff. But have you seen how cute little boys look in big boy undies? Precious! Potty learning will set me free of my fluff addiction! lol!

  45. monique says:

This is to funny I thought I was alone!!!! now I can show my husband and say see I am not alone!!!!!

  46. Jessie says:

Love this article! So funny and sadly true! I am addicted as well. When I was pregnant (and the obsession started) I was cheap and bought used diapers. I had no real experience CD, so needless to say, I’ve got a bunch of wraps and fitteds that I know I will never use. Luckily my boyfriend has his own obsession and as long as I pretend to be interested in his guitar effects pedals, the only thing he says about my diapers is, “We got fluffy mail!”

  47. LesLee says:

I am beyond an addict. My son is only in diapers at night. I plan to ttc this fall and I have over 50 diapers (not counting the huge stack of prefolds) for the next baby. Now I am getting into wool. I do ask for paypal for all gift-giving holidays. I have 6 diapers in the mail headed my way (I blame the BG coupon deal!!) And a confession to other addicts : My husband works nights, as soon as he leaves I go in and “play” with my stash. I lay them out with all the babylegs that I have to to match, I practice pins and snappis with preemie pfs on a bear. I organize them by brand or size or type or any other way I want… I really need a baby!

  48. This is a great blog!!! YES I’m an addict, I’m already planning out a stash for the ‘next baby’ and my current baby is only 6 months old LMAO!!

  49. Maria says:

Ha ha, GUILTY! I only have about 20 or so right now but I SO fit the bill, you were talking about me!

  50. Melissa J. says:

I am an addict. There isn’t a lot of squeeze room in our budget so I had to use tax return money to buy the initial stash and then have been selling off stuff on Ebay to fund the rest. Diapers we didn’t like, teethers, bottles, binks, diaper bags, the list continues!! Must fund the precious!!! In fact we’re making the 2 hour drive tomorrow (after 2 nights in a row of no sleep & taking hubby to work at 5 a.m.) to go to the cloth diaper garage sale at Cotton Babies. Some day I will get to make the trek to MMB!!!!

  51. Ok! I’m IN LOVE with you blog!!! DEF. following you! 🙂

  52. Ashley says:

I love cloth diapering…and I spend way too much money on it. When my husband and I found out how much our tax return was going to be, I was earmarking some of it for diapers…I actually asked him how much I could spend, and he gave me a $200 limit. What does that tell you??

  53. Tamara says:

I’m with Carla but I do realize it’s a problem and am doing some of the cleanup selling stuff on DS that we don’t love, it has helped some.

  54. Alana says:

So I answered yes to all those questions. My mailman thinks I am a lunatic. He pulls up to the house and I am always standing in the window. For the past 3 weeks I have gotten packages 4 out of 6 mail days.
I am a fan of at least 10 diaper websites on facebook.

    Can I add a few?

    11. do you lie to your husband about how much money you spend on diapers?
    12. do you leave your baby naked for a minute to take pics of your entire stash?
    13. do you stalk websites that have weekly stockings?
    14. do you know all the names of the prints by heart?

I answer yes to all these ones too!

  55. Carla says:

My name is Carla and I am an addict. phew.. 1st step is admitting it! My son is 2 1/2 and almost out of diapers. He only wears them at night and to go out and about. um, I am sad! I recently got 3 new diapers for a baby yet to be conceived. We don’t have any plans as of right now to even try to conceive. It could be a long way from now, yet I just ordered 3 new diapers that will only fit newborns! What does one do when they HAVE to put away the fluff?!?!?

  56. Brenda says:

I’m a CD addict!! I’ve only been CD f/t for about a month, and I have 30 CD, 4 Flip covers + 8 inserts, and 6 more on the way! I have got to sell off some of my stash so I can buy some of the ones I’m looking at;) But my obsession has some of my friends interested now, so I see it as my way of helping the environment! (That’s my excuse anyway!)
