The Many Uses for Breastmilk

Monday, November 25th, 2013

Not only is breastmilk perfect for baby, it also has lots of other uses. Breast milk can be your go-to cure for many common ailments for anyone–not just baby.

So instead of running out to buy some special treatment, just pump or hand express some milk to treat whatever the ailment. Some of the most common uses include:

  • Dry or cracked nipples
  • Ear infection
  • jolene iphone 046Pink eye
  • Diaper rash
  • Eczema
  • Acne
  • Yeast
  • Stuffy nose
  • Red eyes
  • Chicken pox
  • Dry skin
  • Chapped lips
  • Contact lens solution
  • Immune boost in older kids
  • Burns
  • Bee stings
  • Upset stomach soother
  • Clogged tear ducts
  • Facial Cleanser

Breast milk can also help cancer patients not only fight cancer but soothe their stomachs from the traditional cancer treatments. In one of my groups, a woman swore her milk was the only reason her grandmother survived cancer. Makes you wonder what else breast milk can do.

If you find yourself in a position of having extra milk you can always look for a mom in need of donor milk. She will be forever grateful for such a gift.

Have you tried any other unconventional uses for breast milk?

Having Visitors After Baby Comes Home

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013

chrsitopher and elizabethSome women love the visits from family and friends, and some just want to spend some quiet time meeting their new baby, and that’s OK. If you choose to have visitors, it doesn’t mean that you need to be a hostess and take care of your company. This is your time to get to know your baby and relax.  If you don’t want visitors for a while let that be known, too. No one will know unless you tell them.

Here are a few tips for having visitors after a new baby:

Let them help. When our second one came, I felt I should be super mom and hostess all at the same time. By our third I realized I should take all the help that was offered, and I did. When family came over and asked if I needed help, the answer was yes. Though I didn’t want or need help with baby–I wanted the extra snuggles–I did have a sink full of dishes, a floor to be vacuumed, laundry to be washed, older kids to feed, and I felt no shame in asking for help.

Have them bring food. Every one of my babies was born by c-section due to pre-eclampsia and the urgency to deliver quickly. So, I really needed and enjoyed the help even if I didn’t want to admit it. Most people want to help out after a baby is born, so if you don’t want them touching your house, bringing food is a useful and time-saving option.

Change your voicemail and email. After you have the baby, people you barely know will want to call and check on you and talk to you and ask you questions. It can be really overwhelming. So after you come back from the hospital, change your voicemail and email to an automatic reply that indicates that you guys are home, well, and will get back to everyone when you have a chance. That will take the pressure off you to check all your gadgets until you get the hang of things.

Wool Covers: The Best Kept Secret in Cloth Diapering

Monday, November 18th, 2013

wolf 3Most people are familiar with cloth diapers, but not as many know about wool diaper covers. Wool was the answer to nighttime leaks for us, like it is for many others.  We now use wool the majority of the time. I’m always getting asked lots of questions about wool.

Why would you want to use wool?

Wool is breathable, antibacterial, natural, absorbs 30 times its weight in moisture, doesn’t retain odor, requires minimum work, and it’s cute, soft and squishy.

What are the difference types of wool?

There are a few different options when it comes to choosing the right type of wool for you. If you’re handy with the sewing machine you can upcycle some covers from an old sweater, or even knit a pair yourself. You can also buy upcycled covers or hand knitted from a WAHM. Machine knit, such as Sloomb, is my favorite super soft, squishy and very good quality. Interlock is another option and a favorite among many moms for its durability.

Cover, longies, or shorties?

This is simply preference. Covers are used just like you would use a PUL cover. Longies are wool pants and great for winter or cold weather. Shorties are just as they sound–wool shorts.

How many covers do I need?

If you’re only using it for nighttime, you can easily get away with rotating between two covers. For full time use, six is a good minimum number. (Let’s not tell my husband this.)

What if it gets dirty?

Don’t be afraid to let your little one play in and use their wool. My youngest has put her wool through some pretty nasty tests, including in the chicken coop and through mud puddles. After washing, they come out practically chickencoopbrand new every time.

When do I wash?

You only have to wash them once every few weeks. Make sure you allow the cover to dry after every use. Once they start smelling after they are dry, or when they get dirty, it’s time to wash. The website  has lots of great washing directions and tips.

Why are wool covers so expensive?

Wool covers are expensive because wool is expensive. To me, it’s worth every penny, and wool resells very well.

How to Treat Diaper Rash with Cloth Diapers

Friday, November 1st, 2013

I switched to cloth diapers with my first child at 2 years old due to a severe diaper rash. Sure enough it cleared up, and I thought cloth worked miracles on all rashes.

Elizabeth takes Rash care very seriously.

Fast forward a few years, and now I also have an amazing little girl who is the queen of diaper rash, cloth or no. Every time she starts cutting a tooth, a rash appears. Every time she poops, a rash appears. Eats blueberries? You got it, a rash appears.

At first, I was so overwhelmed by all the products out there to treat rashes. By now, we’ve used just about every kind of diaper cream and home remedy for diaper rash, and I have my own advice and go-to products that I count on to clear up diapers rash.

When it comes to diaper rashes, prevention is important. My favorite product for prevention and treatment is unrefined coconut oil. It has a ton of uses beyond diaper rashes, too. When out and about I love to have CJ’s Spritz O’ Butter in my diaper bag.

Knowing what caused the rash—general wetness versus yeast invasion–will also help effectively treat it. There are lots of cloth-safe products that are also made with natural ingredients. My favorites are:

  • Episencial Soothing Cream: I am always amazed how quickly this takes away the redness.
  • CJ’s Spritz O’ Butter: This helps soothe the irritation and treat the rash without having to touch the area, a big plus on a squirmy, wiggling baby. It also comes in a yeast formula.
  • Delish Naturals Yum Bum Butter: This comes in delicious scents and is made with great ingredients. I love it for my lips too, but I suggest different tub for that purpose.
  • Motherlove Diaper Rash & Thrush: It provides a quick and effective treatment against yeast.

In addition to the creams on the market, there are also lots of home remedies for cure and prevention:

  • Breast milk:Great to treat all kinds of rashes.

When dealing with a rash we often use flats without a cover to allow more air to hit the area.

  • Coconut Oil: Easy to find and very effective and simple for rashes.
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar: Use it in your LO’s bath water, and in wipe solution to kill yeast, other bad bacteria, and soothe the skin. We use RACV in the bath water at least once a week when there is no rash and daily with a rash.
  • Tea Tree Oil (TTO), lavender oil, Grapefruit seed extract (GSE): These are the most common oils used in wipe solution and diaper creams to prevent and treat diaper rash. TTO and GSE have been shown to effectively treat yeast. I always have a tub of these three oils blended with coconut oil.
  • Probiotics: Taken daily, these will help control yeast.
  • Probiotic powder and water: Make a paste and you can apply this as a cream.
  • Air: Always allow the diaper area to dry and get in lots of diaper-free time.

These are all great ideas for when you feel you have things under control. But if the rash won’t go away, it’s bleeding, or causes baby pain, you might want to get it checked out. As always, other moms and your gut instinct are great indicators of when to seek help for a rash or yeast issues.

These mamas’ really know how to make a happy customer. I would really like to think of myself as their # 1 fan. I know I am not alone, how could I be with the great customer service, sales, advice, and information that come from such a great company. About 3 years ago I stumbled upon MMB’s website ordered 2 diapers and received my first freebie, I was hooked.

Since my first order they have gained a happy loyal customer, with a small addiction to diapers. I have always received top notch customer service and great advice. What I like most is their page isn’t only a place to talk about awesome sales, but also make great friends. Some of my dear friends have been made through the interaction on the page.  It’s honestly no surprise that we are celebrating 30K fans with them.
