Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Andrea’s Family

Friday, February 15th, 2013

I am excited to introduce you to Andrea and her awesome family of four! I love hearing stories like theirs; couples who grew up together, go on to get married, and eventually raise a family together…so sweet and inspiring! Also Andrea’s favorite quote might be one of my new favorites! Read on to learn more about Andrea and her family:

Who are the members of your family? Andrea (me), my husband Joel, and our 2 daughters, Tessa, age 2.5 and Nora, age 6 months.

How did you meet your significant other? We first met playing t-ball and grew up together in school. We started dating after being in Marching band together during his freshman year of high school. He played the quads, I played the bass drum in the drumline.

What do you and your family like to do for recreation? We are a very athletic family. We love to play sports, watch sports, and be outdoors. We enjoy camping, walks, and playing outside.

What is your favorite Mom’s Milk Boutique Product? I have so many. I started at MMB with just a few diapers. I now own what feels like half the store. I love the Ergo, Lactasties, CJ’s BUTTer, MotherLove diaper rash cream. I’ve recently starting using fitted diapers and I really like the Kissaluvs. Of course, my newborn stash was one of my favorites to build because they are just so cute and small.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why? I love my Ergo. It is very sturdy and tough, it’s been through different kinds of weather and other wear and tear and holds up very nicely. It’s easy for both my husband and I to use on either of our children and they are safe, secure, and happy in it.

What goals do you have for your family in the next year or two? Start a garden this spring, hopefully have a 3rd child, continue with our Dave Ramsey debt snowball payoffs.

Describe your daily routine: I get up at 4, pump, shower, get ready, and leave for work by 6:15. My husband gets the kids up, drops them off at daycare, and comes home to pick up the house. He leaves for work at 11:45. I get off at 3:30, work out, go home to start dinner, pick up the girls from daycare and serve dinner. Then we do bathtime, get the girls ready for bed and my husband gets home at 8, just in time to help tuck the girls in and get them asleep.

What has been your toughest challenge as a mom so far? Meeting the needs of everyone. It’s important for me to be a good, attentive mother, but I also don’t want to lose my identity as a wife or myself. Balancing all those simultaneously is tricky.

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences? I love to go wander around Target. I also love (and miss) coffee dates with old friends.

What is one of your favorite quotes? Be here to bless, not impress.

Thanks Andrea for sharing your family with us! I am excited for your plans to grow both a spring garden and a 3rd baby, lol! Wishing you the very best on both accounts. :)

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Amy’s Family!

Friday, February 8th, 2013

I am excited to introduce you to Amy and her family! I absolutely LOVE the story of how she met her hubby…it would make a cute scene in a book or movie. Read on to learn more about Amy and her awesome traveling family!

Who are the members of your family? Amy (Mommy), George (Daddy), twins Alex and Drew (6 ½), Ethan (2), Victor (3 months). And our 2 cats, Felix and Persephone.

How did you meet your significant other? At an art museum, where we got into an argument over the merits of modern art. I won, and he bought me a tea at the cafe. Our whole house is now decorated with modern art.

What is your favorite Mom’s Milk Boutique Product? Very hard to say, but I think the Best Bottoms diaper system are currently my favorite. The inserts are super-absorbent (even overnight), and I can use them on both the 2-year-old and the 3-month-old. The shells are great, they hold everything, wipe clean, and come out of the wash like new! I just wish MMB could stock the training pants, hint, hint… :)

What do you and your family like to do for recreation? We travel! My husband is Active Duty Army, and we are stationed in Germany. We’ve lived here for four years and one of our family goals is to see as much of the world as possible. My twins had seen as many different places by age 3 as I had by age 30, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share so much of the world with our kids. Below is a photo I took last spring of my husband and the boys walking through the woods in The Netherlands. (Husband’s sporting the Ergobaby Performance Sport, which is his favorite carrier!) We also take a trip every winter to the Alps, where my husband snowboards, the kids go to ski school, and I go to the spa–very recreational. :)

What is your favorite baby carrier and why? My favorite is the Beco Butterfly II, because I can carry my toddler on my back and barely even feel him, and I can easily get the baby in and out. I also love that you can put an older baby in the “pocket” part and put the carrier on like a backpack–so much easier for when they can’t yet climb on your back!

Describe your cloth diaper stash: Mostly Gro-Via shells and inserts, although we’re adding in Best Bottoms. I have a few Blueberry and Thirsties shells, and a mix of inserts, but so far the Gro-Via and Best Bottoms work best for us. (I love that I can lay the BB inserts into another brand of shell and they still absorb everything.) We’re looking at trainers for the very near future, and I’m hoping to try the Blueberry trainers.

What is the best and worst parenting advice you have ever been given? The best advice was from my mom: “Trust your instincts.” The worst was from a lactation consultant in the hospital where my twins were born. They were premature and receiving gavage-feedings in the NICU with my milk. She was very upset that I was only using a manual pump (the electric never worked for me), and she scolded me “If you don’t learn to use the electric pump, you will NEVER make enough milk for two babies.” I never used an electric pump and my twins nursed exclusively until 4 months, and continued on only breastmilk (no formula) until they self-weaned at 19 months. Glad I followed my mom’s advice!

What goals do you have for your family in the next year or two? The first goal is to survive colic. Our youngest is very colicky and it’s hard on everyone. Once we get past that, we’re hoping to do some more traveling. We want to go to Turkey, the Czech Republic, Berlin, and Poland in the next couple of years.

Describe your daily routine: I have a 3-month-old. Once I get the big boys off to school and the toddler to preschool, we go with the flow.

What has been your toughest challenge as a mom so far? Having a colicky baby. I think it’s more challenging because this is our 4th. We thought that since we survived preemie twins (brutal!) and already had a single baby (easiest baby in the world), that we were prepared to have another one. He’s starting to come out of it, but the nonstop screaming for hours on end has been extremely hard on everyone. I feel terrible that I can’t do anything to make him feel better (and we have tried EVERYTHING), and I feel terrible for the older kids too. The screaming is hard on them, plus Mommy is always pre-occupied with the baby. It’s definitely a tough transition. I’m so grateful that my 2-yr-old is still nursing, because at least we can tandem-nurse and he gets his mommy-time in (and the baby isn’t screaming then). I try to find time to spend with each of my older boys as well.

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences? Massages and pedicures! Also, I keep large scented candles, and I almost always have one burning. I like soothing scents, like lavender or apple pie, to warm up the whole house.

What’s your number one secret for stretching a dollar? Going from hybrid-diapering to all-cloth is saving us a lot of money! I was afraid to try all-cloth for a long time because we have a German washer and dryer, but once I saw how much we were going to have to spend each month to hybrid-diaper two at once, it made a lot more sense to go all-cloth. The laundry isn’t nearly as bad as I was afraid it would be, and we are saving over $60 a month not buying the Biosoakers.

What is one of your favorite quotes? “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” –Helen Keller

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? I already have superpowers, are you kidding? I make milk! For two babies! At the same time! I also teach children’s theatre classes in the summer time, occasionally act and direct in our local theatre, and I’m on the board of directors for our community peer breastfeeding organization, Mom2Mom KMC, so I have the added superpower of being able to go on 3 hours of sleep for about 4 days… If I could have ANOTHER superpower, it would be the ability to create extra hours in the day when I need them!

Wow, Amy you DO have superpowers!! Thank you so very much for sharing your family with us. We wish you all the very best and may your travel adventures resume soon as your youngest son grows! :)

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Emily’s Family

Friday, December 21st, 2012

I have a feeling you are really going to enjoy meeting Emily and her family. They have some super fun and exciting adventures ahead….read on to learn more about what’s in store for them over the next few years!

Who are the members of your family?

My family includes Chris (31), Emily (28), Henrik (2), Petra (4 months).. (and Romeo, our 8 year old pomeranian)

How did you meet your significant other?
My husband and I started dating 2 weeks before I left for a summer study program in Aix-en-Provence, France. He was leaving around the same time to do his first Half Ironman in Austria. We were so smitten with each other, we decided to make our love work. I met him in Zagreb, Croatia, just after his Ironman, and we spent 4 amazing days visiting the coast of Slovenia, and Venice as well. He flew to Paris to meet me (6 weeks into our relationship) and proposed to me on the top of the Eiffel Tower! Later that summer, he made the trip over the ocean once more to meet me in Holland, where my sister lives. We started dating in May, and were married the following August!

What is your favorite Mom’s Milk Boutique Product?
That’s a tough question, because I love everything at Mom’s Milk Boutique. However, CJ’s BUTTer is one product I plan on using throughout their cloth diapering years. If I happen to see a little redness, usually one or two small applications of CJ’s clears it right up! I also use it preventatively and their skin is usually perfect.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why?
We just splurged on an Ergo this past Black-Friday. It is beyond wonderful! I had such back pain from hauling my babies around (often both at once), and now I am totally back pain-free! It will make traveling with a baby MUCH easier.

Describe your cloth diaper stash:
I have such a mix! This is my second stash, and I am very happy with it. I have about 30 prefolds, used with Flip, Bummis, Econobum, Happy Heinys, and Kawaii diaper covers! (whew!) Also, we have some Bumgenius All in ones and pockets. We have a couple Imse Vimse swim diapers too, which we’ll put to use next month!

What goals do you have for your family in the next year or two?
We actually are headed on quite an adventure! This December 31st, we leave for Costa Rica, where we plan to live for 3 months to a full year. We’d really like to master Spanish before leaving Central/South America, so we might go to Chile next. We also plan to spend a few months (at least) in Prague, Budapest, and the south of France. As mentioned, I have family in Holland, so we’d love to spend some time there as well. My husband works from home, and I’m a stay-at-home mom, so why not travel before the little ones reach school-age?

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences?
I don’t really get much “me” time, but if I do, I try to take luxury in simple things, like a hot bath or a walk with my dog, Romeo. If I find myself lucky enough to get both kids to bed before 9pm, my husband and I might cuddle up and watch a romantic comedy.

What’s your number one secret for stretching a dollar?
Well, I save a lot of money by providing a healthy diet for my family. I exclusively breastfeed my babies (so that saves a ton!), visit my local farm for cheaper, and better produce, and cook most days instead of going out. For “dates” with my husband, we often cook a nice meal together and share a bottle of sparkling cider. ;)

Thanks a bunch Emily for sharing your family with us!! We wish you the very best on your upcoming travels!! Also if you would like to follow Emily’s family on their adventures be sure to check out her blog at http://www.mommybluebird.com/.

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Jill’s Family

Friday, December 14th, 2012

I really enjoy introducing you to some of the families here at Breastfeed.Babywear.ClothDiaper.Naturally! It’s been a really fun way to get to know our readers better! This week I am excited to spotlight Jill’s family. They are blessed to live on 8 acres in the country. Jill has some great tips for meal planning and establishing a daily groove with your kids. Read on to learn more….

Who are the members of your family?

Matthew, Jill and 2 daughters: Keeley (4) and Brennan (1). We live on 8 acres in the country. My husband has worked on machines that go underwater and up in the air. I  stay at home and keep my feet on the ground.
Describe your cloth diaper stash:

Full circle: I started out with prefolds and covers for a newborn, then added pockets and All in Ones, and have just re-stashed with some flats and prefolds as pocket stuffers, kind of a ‘best of both worlds’ attitude. You get the great fit of a pocket with the old-world of cotton/hemp inserts that absorb well and wash up wonderfully!

Describe your daily routine:

One of my friends introduced me to the EASY routine for babies (eat time, awake time, sleep time, you time). We still go around this type of schedule for both kids, you just have to adjust the time in between the ‘sleep’ the older they get! I sneak in kitchen and laundry chores while the kids are eating at the table. I don’t really get ‘you’ time anymore because my kids sleep at different times, but I do the things I CAN do while each kid is awake (for instance if I sleep late, then while the baby naps in the morning, the 4 year old watches tv while I shower).

What are some of your favorite “me” time indulgences?

I rarely do things just for me, I can’t justify the expense, so instead I take great happiness in just getting to paint my toenails a fun color, reading books from the library, or watching ‘crime’ tv shows after the kids are in bed.

What’s your number one secret for stretching a dollar?

Meal planning with leftovers. I like to make a bigger item like a roast chicken and then get several meals like soup, enchiladas, and sandwiches out of the same main dish.

Share one special family tradition you have?

On Christmas Eve, we take the kids to church services in their pajamas and read the Christmas story from the bible and ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ to the kids before bed!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Hands down, it would be to take a short nap and be completely refreshed. My kids ‘split’ naps so there’s never a ‘break’ in kid caring. On those rare opportunities that they are quiet at the same time, I don’t have enough time to get a real nap, but if 10 minutes was enough, I could probably sneak that time in somewhere and be a whole different person!

Thanks Jill for sharing your family with us! I love the idea of an EASY routine! I have never heard that before…sounds like a great daily rhythm for you and the kids. :)

Friday Family Spotlight: Meet Michelle’s Family

Friday, December 7th, 2012

I am very excited to introduce you to Michelle and her family! Michelle is actually a good friend of mine….one who I deeply admire as a mother. She is super gentle with her children and approaches challenges with humor and grace. Read on to learn more about her awesome family!

Who are the members of your family?

There’s me (Michelle), my husband James, who always seems to have his nose in a book. Our daughter Libby (7), who doesn’t hear you until you sing to her, our son Justus (4) who is normally walking around with some Lego contraption he built and our second son Gideon (2) who eats hummus by the spoonful (scratch that) handful.

How did you meet your significant other?

We met in high school. We went to rival high schools but we were both part of a group that would do activities with each other. He actually dated my best friend before I started dating him and she kind of set us up.

What is your favorite Mom’s Milk Boutique Product?

Right now I’m trying to build up my mama cloth stash so my favorite product is the Imse Vimse Menstrual Pads with Wings, I already have one set and I’m looking to buy more.

What is your favorite baby carrier and why?

ERGO babycarrier is by far my favorite! I have four carriers: a sling, a wrap, and 2 Ergos (performance and original) I keep an Ergo in the car and one in the house. I love my other carriers for different stages but the Ergo I love that I can use it for just about any stage my babies are at. I still use it for my 2 ½ year old and have used it for other children while watching them; it’s how I know to calm a fussy child (besides nursing them).

What is the best and worst parenting advice you have ever been given?

Best advice was from my mom: you can never spoil a baby, pick them up as often as either you or baby needs to.

Worst advice was from a friend: your milk doesn’t come in for about a week so you should pick a formula before baby is born to feed them. I knew better than this because, although I was still pregnant with my first, I had already attended a La Leche League meeting or two and read the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.

What’s your number one secret for stretching a dollar?

Meal planning has to be the biggest stretch of the dollar. If I go to the store without a plan for the week I end up spending a week’s worth of grocery budget but only have a couple meals and have to go back to the store for other things. If I plan it all out before I go to the store I have a full week’s worth of meals spending the same amount of money.

There's Giddy....enjoying some hummus!

Share one special family tradition you have:

My favorite Christmas tradition is, when we set up our Christmas tree we always play the Chipmunk Christmas CD’s. Since I was a kid I can remember doing this. My mom had them on record when we were kids but as soon as I found them on CD I bought one for each of my sisters and they both still carry on this tradition.

Thanks Michelle for sharing your family with us! And even though I know your family pretty well already, I learned a few new things about you! :)
